Fear of the Lord

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction,To perceive the words of understanding, To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity; To give prudence to the simple,To the young man knowledge and discretion— A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, To understand a proverb and an enigma,The words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,But fools despise wisdom and instruction." Proverbs 1:1-7 NKJV

Devotional

Should we be afraid of God? Should we view God as a scary monster? No. Webster dictionary defines "fear" as "profound reverence and awe especially toward God." When we "fear" the Lord, we show honor and respect. Ironically, we see this glimpse of "fear" when the Beyhive sees Beyonce or MAGA fans get a glimpse of Donald Trump.

Do you get excited when you see God? Do you seek to run to get his attention? How early would you wake up to get just one glimpse of the Lord Almighty? Would you silence your phone and focus your whole attention on God?

Fear of the Lord (or awe of the Lord) is the beginning of knowledge. Identifying God as your creator opens your eyes. For example, you realize that Beyonce is not God and it is ridiculous to pay over $900 for a concert ticket. With knowledge comes wisdom, instruction, understanding, justice, wisdom, equity, prudence, knowledge, and discretion.

Perhaps, you don't need another self-help book or Beyonce album. Start with the fear of the Lord. Who is God? Who is God to you?

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for your Word. I confess I am a sinner. I confess that I have disobeyed you and ignored you. God, here I am. I want to know you. Help me to fear you, God. Help me to honor you, God. In Jesus' name. Amen.
