Stop Depending on your Pastor!

Updated: Feb 19, 2022

But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ. 1 John 2:27 NLT

APPLICATION

Our true teacher is God’s Holy Spirit. He lives within us and is teaching us what is true. He teaches us everything we need to know. Our source for truth and information is God. His Holy Spirit and Bible (inspired by the Holy Spirit) can answer all of our questions and speak to the innermost part of our soul.

The pastor is a valuable leader in our community. This blog is a valuable site for information about the Bible, but it can't be your source. God is our source!

The role of the pastor (and this website) is to point you to God.

So, stop depending on your pastor and depend on God.

How?

  1. Go to your bookshelf and dust off that old Bible. Or, go to the app store and download the Bible app.

  2. Allow God to lead you where to start. Just open to a random page and start reading. (ex. the book of Mark is short and introduces you to Jesus)

  3. Read what you can. Consistency is better than quantity. If you can only read one line, then read one line. Meditate on that line. What does it mean? What is God saying?

  4. Talk to God about what you read (aka PRAY).

  5. Repeat steps 1-4 everyday. If you skip a day, then do it the next day. It isn't about perfection and quantity. Be intentional with reading the Bible and spending time with God.

PRAYER

Dear God, thank you for your Word. I pray for the individual reading this devotional. Please God, help him or her. Answer the deep cry in this person's heart. Soften his or her heart, so that they can hear and feel your gentle prodding. Give them your supernatural peace which surpasses all understanding. Please save this person and correct the deception in their minds with your truth. He or she would like to know you and start a true relationship with you. Through your Holy Spirit, guide this person into your truth. Thank you for what you are going to do in this person's life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
